End of #RodriguezWeek

The only movies in the QT/RR fortnight I have not watched, that I wanted to, so far is 'Natural Born Killers', 'The Faculty' and 'Grindhouse'. I needed a break from movies and wanted to tick a TV show that had been lying around for ever off instead of reeling off some movies.

(It was kind of a #RodriguezDay not week, as I got most of the movies I wanted to watch done within Monday... freeing me up for ticking off some tv shows and random movies)

So in addition to whatever I watch weekly... 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, Cougar Town (to people who may still be put off by the name... just watch it!!!), New Girl, The Vampire Diaries (Guilty non-pleasure... I do not know why I watch this show... oh yeah, Damon....

So fair enough, instead of watching the show I could google image him for 42 minutes a week...

but nope nope nnyope I can't do that since I'm already so far into the show I may as well keep going with it.

In other non-tangent, Archer was awesome this week.. isnt it always?

I watched 'American Horror Story' wrap up this week, I may have gasped and fist-pumped (ironically... neh I owned my fist-pump, no shame) at the ending. I cannot (but inevitably have to) wait to see where they go for season 3 (and which cast members will return.) I ain't even going to post spoilers, but if you are have not watched this show and love horror, were a fan of Nip/Tuck please give this a go. #HorrorSquad 

I watched the cancelled series 'The Gates', yeah about vampires and succubus's... succubi... succubus..? And witches and shit, cause there can't be a show just about one supernatural type of beings without brining everything else into it. Yeah this wasn't up to much, it was worth the one viewing but there is a reason some shows are cancelled, I still have not found the reason (low ratings I know) that Firefly was cancelled.

I also ticked off 'A Young Doctors Notebook'... recommended. I didn't know anything about it before watching... which is how I like to go into some tv shows/movies.

Also also ticked off was 'Outcasts' a BBC series, usually all I watch from my own country is the odd chat show, a few comedy panel shows, the odd sitcom (currently Miranda and Mrs. Brown's Boys, I was dead against Mrs. Brown's Boys until I gave in and watched it.) and of course being a geek... Doctor Who. (cue gratuitous picture that gives me warm fuzzy feelings of Matt Smith as The Doctor in the newest decked out TARDIS)

I'm having a Haven catchup. In the past two years I've always watched this show this way... entire season at a time, it's never broken onto my "watch weekly" list. There is no actual list. I enjoy the show, even more now Adam Copeland is featured more regularly.

My favourite QT/RR movies in order of Awesomeness (imo, obviously it's not gonna be in somebody elses opinion now is it.)

I know I don't go in for Awards Ceremonies  that is unless its for a movie I like. Then it should win everything and the award matters.

It was superb! This needs to win 'Best Original Screenplay' (which sounds odd when you take into consideration how QT pulls in his insperation, but there's nobody who writes his unique way)




If anyone can spare $300 I'd like one of these....Spare $600 and let me have Django and Schultz.

Why is it so good?

The script.

Characters are well defined, given lots to do, lots of goals. Django has a clear goal, to get his wife back.

Obstacles are put in his way, and he grows as a character, as a man, learning along the way skills that will help him achieve his goal.

QT's movies can be almost 3 hours and not feel it because with every dialogue heavy scene, tension builds under the surface, tension that hints at major shit about to kick off. As a viewer I'm kept waiting in anticipation and when it comes, when the big gun fight, the deaths are delivered they are more than worth the wait. They are better for the wait.

When you think its over, there's more awesomness to come.

And damn if QT doesn't know how to write instant classic lines.

I'd saw the trailer once online previous to seeing the trailer in the cinema when I was with my sister, she looked to me "Huh? How are you quoting it already?" and by the time I saw the movie, I had more lines memorized.

And then there is the...

Acting.

The actors capture you into their world, the world of "The Southern".

Jamie Foxx as Django grows so much over the course of this movie. He is such a physical actor, his whole demeanour changes as he overcomes obstacles, is given worth and freedom.

Christoph Waltz's portrayal as Schultz makes me want to re-watch this movie immediately, if not sooner. He is so disgusted by slavery that it is him that sets the entire movie in motion. He is so polite, a stranger in a strange land, yet there is something under the surface that tells you he can handle his shit, that he may be polite but it does not mean he is not the most dangerous man in the room.

I think Christoph Waltz is my new love.

Leo DiCaprio is a scene stealer, and stealing it from him is Sam Jackson. The two of them leap out the screen, grab you by the collar and make you take notice.

-First off, I'd like to thank you for your time, so secondly would you like to tell readers a bit about your project 'Sledge'?

I appreciate your time as well. When it comes to SLEDGE, I wanted to create something that brings us all back to the golden age of slasher films. I know people say that they wish the 80’s were still here, but instead of living in the past, why not start making films for now? Sledge fits the storyline of a slasher, but is a lot of fun and I think fans of horror or even comedy films will get a kick out of what we have made.

                -Did you draw any inspiration from the plethora of slasher killers?

If I said I didn’t, I know that would be a lie. I grew up with slashers like Freddy, Chucky, Leatherface, etc. When I was creating Adam Lynch, I wanted him to be different from those guys in the way his personality was but at the same time, bring fear into people that don’t watch horror films.

                -Who is your personal favourite slasher killer?

Personal favorite would have to be Freddy Krueger. When I was six years old I had my tonsils out, and my father took me to the toy store. He told me I could buy any toy for $30 or less, so I found a pull string talking Freddy Krueger doll. The one question I remember him asking me was “How do you know who this guy is”, and being six, I said “mom showed me” and a fight probably ensued, but I left with my first ever horror collectible that I still have to this day.

                -What is the most memorable kill in a slasher film, and how do you propose to do something either as effective/out do it?

I am a huge Adam Green fan and love Hatchet, so it has to come from that film. It is where the lady gets her head ripped off from the top of the jaw. BJ McDonnell who was the lead camera operator did a phenomenal job filming that scene that you can’t see the separate cuts of the film.

                -Where did you get the inspiration from for the character of Adam Lynch?

Honestly I just wanted to create something that was fun and that was my own. I sat down to write the script after my wife gave me the idea to fly up to upstate New York to film Sledge with my Co-Director John Sovie II. As I sat and began to type, I had this character flash in front of my eyes who loved horror films, comic books, video games just like myself. What if he believed he was inside that world, where once he kills the kids, they get reset kind of in a way all of the Friday the 13^th films do.

                -What sets him apart from generic slashers and will make him, as I hope, a legend like Freddy or Jason?

The jokes and comments he makes. Adam Lynch is someone that I think fans will actually enjoy and will hopefully enjoy his one liners. He makes a lot of original jokes but at the same time he recites lines from previous films or makes sounds from video games when killing people. I really believe gamers, horror fiends and comic book geeks will enjoy it. I honestly say that because I am all of those and I know it’s something I would enjoy.

                -Where do you think the horror genre is headed?

The genre is headed in a positive direction when it comes to the independent crowd. There are films constantly coming out that are amazing like Martyrs, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and others. These are not big studio movies but fans are finally getting to see them because of ON DEMAND. As for the big budget industry, we can all see that Remakes are their bread and butter.

               

-How much has the internet and social media helped you as a filmmaker?

Internet and Social Media has made it easier for fans to reach out to their heroes and help them. Adam Lynch is named after Adam Green and Joe Lynch as a thank you to the both of them for helping me out when I wanted to make a film. I had met them both on a few occasions and when I decided to make Sledge, I contacted them via Facebook and Twitter and they were kind enough to write to me and give me incite on what to do and what not to do. Also, it is a great way to promote yourself when you are an Independent film maker because you don’t have that publicist or agent that will do those things for you. With the voice of the fans is how Sledge is getting out there and I cannot thank them enough.

                -I'm sure like many other horror fans you have an opinion on remakes, care to share?

When it comes to remakes, I do not hate them and I do not love them. I say that because I do really enjoy some of them, like the Texas Chainsaw remake with Jessica Biel. I honestly love that film besides the creepy kid with the screwed up teeth. Now, I have to admit, I really didn’t like the Nightmare on Elm Street remake because of the lead characters and their Emo frame of mind. I honestly say enjoy what we get and if you don’t like it, say so. If you do enjoy it, like I am hoping to enjoy the Evil Dead remake along with Carrie, go out and say so. Don’t be ashamed to say you like a horror film because you think you won’t be considered a real horror fan, unless you say you like Twilight, than just keep that to yourself.

                -What are your favorite old school horror movies, and what are your top horror movies from the last decade?

My all-time favorite film horror or not is An American Werewolf in London, followed by Jaws. When it comes to 80’s films, I love John Carpenters The Thing (not the crappy prequel that was really a remake), Hatchet, Halloween, The Nightmare on Elm Street series, Hellraiser series. You name it, I more than likely have seen it and enjoyed it.

As for the top horror films of the last decade, I would have to say Hatchet 1 and 2 are the top of the list along with Frozen. Yes, they are Adam Green films, but again, I am a big fan of his and what he does. Next, I would have to say Martyrs is another film that I enjoy thoroughly because you just don’t know what to expect through it all, and finally, Paranormal Activity 1, 2 and Insidious. I think those three films were amazing when they came out, but as I have seen with 3 & 4, I lost interest. The Saw series was also great with its many ups and downs, but I overall enjoyed that series too.

                -Who were your early inspirations, was horror your first love?

My early inspirations would have to be John Landis. He is the perfect blend of Horror and Comedy when it comes to An American Werewolf in London. Also, I love Wes Craven and what he was able to create along with John Carpenter. Mr. Craven was one of the first people I had the pleasure of meeting when I moved to California, and he couldn’t have been nicer to a nervous fan boy.

                -What was your first horror movie, how did that effect you wanting to see other horror movies and be a part of the genre?

The first horror movie I saw was Chucky when I was five years old. I still remember the nightmare where I woke up and saw Chucky everywhere inside of my room. However, according to my oldest brother, I have been watching horror films since I came home from the hospital after I was born. I have loved horror since I was born and will always be my first love.

               

-I read that you bang out a script in 4 days, very impressive. Could you give us any information on future projects?

My future projects are kind of up in the air. We have some surprises to throw at people with a new take on Vampires (they don’t sparkle) along with Zombies and a werewolf script I wrote off of my book Fat Kid’s Wolfy Revenge: Not for the Weak hearted or Mature minded. My book is a horror comedy that I wrote as if I was still seventeen and ran into a werewolf tearing all the dumb girls apart at my high school. I would love to be able to make that into a feature film with all of the intricacies that are inside of the book. I created a lot of memorable death scenes that I would love to display on screen, including a breast implant regurgitation from the werewolf as he talks crap to her and kicks her. Life of Pi (2012)

Where Chuck Nolan had Wilson, Pi has Richard Parker...

 'Life of Pi' tells the story of a man named after a french swimming pool, but because of bullies he shortens his name to just Pi. He grows up within a family that runs a zoo, until they have to move to Canada and sell off the animals.

On their way to Canada, taking with them some animals to sell, the ship they are travelling on gets into a storm and sinks, leaving Pi stranded in the ocean with some animals, most notably a tiger called Richard Parker for company.

The movie is in one word... Beautiful.

To those that have not read the book, I am one of them, that's what it is... a story.

The older Pi, now living in Canada is retelling this story to a writer who is out of ideas for his new book, having just thrown away the last two years of work he had been writing.

By the end Pi tells the young writer that once he was back on land, safe and recovering in hospital that two men working for an insurance company visited him. They want to know how it all went down, literally, why the ship sank. And how Pi survived.

Pi goes on to tell them the story we have been witness to the entire movie thus far... a story of a boy sharing a boat with a Tiger. How the tiger kept him alive, if not through fear, being alert, giving him something to care for.

They do not buy it. It's a ridiculous story.

Pi mulls this over and tells them the same story, but instead of sharing the life boat with the tiger, and the hyena and orang-outang... he shares it with other people.

The story plays out the same as it did with the animals but with humans.

Where it was cute and funny, yet still touching when it was animals not its disturbing and upsetting when its humans, when its his mother, and when it is him. He is the tiger.

I love the stark contrast of how he tells the human story, how it is filmed. When we are with him and the tiger through the movie the visuals are spectacular. The 3-D draws you in, amazing, the colours and textures.

There is one point in the movie when Pi is looking overboard into the depths of the sea below, and the camera follows his gaze... and what of what we see. Please go see it in theatres in 3-D if not for just what we see in the depths of the ocean.

When we are with him in the hospital all we see is white. We are close up on his face as he tells the alternative story.

Yeah, I filled up.

The older Pi shows the young writer the insurance document report, and the story the two insurance men wrote down was the story we saw, Pi and the tiger.

Take from that what you will. I choose to believe that comments on how all religion is made up and it's your faith, your belief that makes it real. To you.

But you choose as a viewer which story to believe.


My sister thought the animal story that we had watched was the real one and the human one he had made up, I thought the opposite. It's up to you.

The Matrix (1999) and Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

Boom! Got my number 2 in the IMDb Top 250 watched.

The motherlickin' Matrix

What is there to say on 'The Matrix' that has not been said... Its a movie that will be discussed for as long as movie geeks watch it and young movie geeks discover it.

I remember the first time I saw it. I was staying at my grandparents house in the summer of 1999, and my grandad and I headed over to the Silverlink and sat to the left in the second row. We loved it. (and he rarely likes any movies, except 'From Dusk til Dawn' and Jason Statham, but he's recently told me he's grown tired of ol'Statham.)

For years, and hell even now when I rewatch it, I had the biggest girlcrush on Trinity, just thought I'd share.

The visuals are amazeballs, the story and concept open to your own interpretation, and understanding.

You can read into the movie from a philosophical or a religious stand point.

Or go "oooh that looks cool!"

I followed it up with 'Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon'

And could have gone with knocking another one off the IMDb Top 250 list, but I was tired and wanted to watch a favourite movie. (not that 'The Matrix' is not a favourite, it is)

Why the love?

I like horror movies.

I like comedy horror movies.

I like self referential movies. Meta. All that baloney.

We meet Leslie, a guy who wants to follow in the footsteps of the Greats... Freddy, Jason, Michael... and carve out his own legend. In the universe of this movie, these horror movie villains are real.

We are introduced to Leslie through a college documentary crew, headed by Taylor as they join him as he plots and plans his stalking and killing of a young teen, Kelly, "Survivor Girl" (most commonly known as "Final Girl"), just like the old slasher films of the '80s.

#Spoilers

So as it goes our aptly named Taylor (I have a thing for gender neutral named Final Girls... Laurie Strode, Sidney Prescott or subverted with Ashley Williams in the Evil Dead series) is his "survivor girl". It is she who faces him down during the climax, as he planned all along.

But before we get there we are treated to Leslie showing us behind the curtain, and into the world of supernatural killing sprees... the world of slashers. How they do what they do. The why they do what they do comes later, from Taylors "own understanding or not."

The girl he had been stalking was his "red herring" as his friend, and old slasher, Eugene ( Played by Scott "Hershell in 'The Walking Dead" Wilson) asks him about when Taylor and her crew go with Leslie to celebrate his "ahab" moment.

"What's an Ahab!" Taylor jumps around in celebration with Leslie, quite taken in by him, yeah I ship them. Leslie is charasmatic, funny and handsome... and a slasher.

He is happy that he has got an Ahab, like Moby Dick, like Dr. Loomis, he has an adversary that stands as a pure "white hat", all that is good, to come and stop Leslie.

Without bad you cannot have good.

And none other than Horror Legend Robert Englund plays his Ahab, Doc Halloran.

He, just as Taylor and her crew, believe that Kelly is Leslies target. Leslie makes out that she is a sweet virginal innocent teen, as he stalks her at work, at the Library, placing false "evidence" to link Kelly to him, to link her to him as a relative.

This is all part of the show for Taylor.

As Leslie prepares for the showdown, the party at his "home", he can't come forward and claim it because it would not help build his legend for people to know he is actually alive. He started the myth that he was the son of the Vernons, his own name actually being Leslie Mancuso, who was enslaved to work in their orchard on their farm with only a sickle. The boy revolted against his family, killed and hanged his mother from one of the trees in the Orchard, and when the townspeople (gotta have an angry mob!) flung the boy over Glen Echos falls, where it is said that he was eaten by turtles...

Nice!

As he prepares for the showdown, he runs through how he sees the nights proceedings to go, well... no... but its the version he tells Taylor, who has not figured out that she is his "survivor girl" yet.

I really like this run through, we get to see the typical way this scenario would play out in such a movie, with him facing off against the virginal Kelly...

Taylor and the crew, after she shares a close emotional moment with Leslie and they are in the next room as he makes his first kill, they leave. Almost.

Conciousness get the better of them, as they head back into the house, back to the party to warn the teens... but find Kelly fucking her boyfriend, and it is not until his plan seems to be going wrong as he stalks and kills his way through Kellys friends and Taylors crew that it dawns on Taylor that she is his "survivor girl"

If I had to recommend only one of these movies, its gonna be 'Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon'. Why?

Because everybody has seen and appreciated 'The Matrix' (yeah I rated Matrix higher than Leslie Vernon... but still I stand by my "everybody has seen The Matrix")

So there you have it fine reader... any horrorfan should see this, or be ashamed of themselves. Ashamed!

I honestly do not think it will play as interesting to none horror fans but its essential for us.

First viewing.

Because I had no interest in seeing something about cars that was not animated nor had Ryan Gosling as the Driver.

It was a movie I toyed with eventually seeing but the more I put it off, because of my utter disinterest with the subject and no prior knowledge of the man nor the field he is in I had reserved to the non-fact I would simply never see it.

That was until I found it in @connorM1993 car, and took it home with me. Weeks pass and even after I lend him my DVD of 'The Breakfast Club' and he watches it, I still have not moved 'Senna' from beside my television.


So I popped it in, and I felt like it had been on 15 minutes and suddenly it was halfway through. Sounds a good thing, right?

No.

I just don't care.

It's not like I don't have any interest in documentaries... I do.

Earlier today I watched 'Urbanized' and really enjoyed it.

And I am not averse to sports movies,

.....I love the 'Rocky' series, I cried at the end of 'The Fighter' and 'Field of Dreams', I feel nostalgic for 'Cool Runnings'... I've at least seen 'Remember the Titans' (If not only for Denzel Washington)

'Senna' just did nothing for me. I was not engaged, I did not care about him. Zip.
